IVOR MAN KILLED IN SHIPYARD ACCIDENT Benjamin G. Horne, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. B.G. Horne, Sr., of Ivor met with instantaneous death on Friday, July 12, when a rack of steel collapsed at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., where he was employed. He was born December 25, 1916 [sic*], and is survived by his parents; his fiancee, Miss Mary Howard May of Ivor; two sisters, Mrs. Pat Hardy of Norfolk and Miss Doris Lee Horne of Ivor; two brothers, Clyde B. Horne of Newport News and Fred W. Horne of Norfolk; a paternal grandmother, Mrs. Geo. W. Horne of Newport News; a maternal grandfather, J.P. Holland of Norfolk, and a number of aunts and uncles. He was a member of Tucker Swamp Baptist Church and a member of the Baraca Sunday School Class of Ivor Baptist Church. The funeral services were conducted from the home on Sunday afternoon by his pastor, Rev. George Kissinger, III. The hymns, "In The Garden" and "Sometime We'll Understand" were sung by Mrs. Homer Whitley and others of Windsor. The active pallbearers were: Shelton Babb, Walter West, Russell Andrews, Franklin Bryant, John Pulley, Woodrow Pulley, Burton Edwards and Hurley Taylor. His parents appear in the 1940 Census on Highway 460, Ivor, but they resided in Isle of Wight Co. on 1 Apr 1935. In 1930 the family lived on Pinner St., Suffolk. His father had become a barber. In 1920 the family rented a farm on the Zuni-Courthouse Rd., Isle of Wight Co. His paternal grandparents are buried at Tucker Swamp Baptist Church.
