BERNARD MELVILLE HERRING

Courtland - Age 79, a native of Washington, North Carolina, died Monday, 
October 24, 1983 in his home at 105 Hanging Tree Road.  He was the husband 
of the late Thelma Mead Herring.  He had retired as a chief clerk at 
Seaboard System Railroad Inc.  He was secretary-treasurer of the Courtland 
Rescue Squad and a member of the Courtland Ruitan Club.  He was a member 
and deacon of Courtland Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen H. Pixley of Courtland; a son, Army 
Brig. General B.M. Herring Jr. of Fort Stewart, Georgia; 2 sisters, Mildred 
Herring and Kathryn H. Austin both of Savannah, Georgia; 2 brothers, Emory L. 
Herring and Richard S. Herring,  both of Vidalia, Georgia and 6 grandchildren. 
The funeral will be conducted at 2:00 pm Thursday, October 25, 1983 in 
Courtland Baptist Church by the Rev Edmund Ellis.  Burial will be in Riverside 
Cemetery.  Wright Funeral Home of Franklin is in charge.  Memorial donations 
may be sent to the Courtland Rescue Squad.

BERNARD MELVILLE HERRING

   COURTLAND - A funeral for Bernard Herring, 79, will be held today at 2 p.m. 
in Courtland Baptist Church by the Rev. Edmund Ellis.  Burial will be in 
Riverside Cemetery.  Wright Funeral Home of Franklin is in charge.

   Herring died Monday in his home.

   A native of Washington, N.C., he was the husband of the late Thelma Mead 
Herring.

   Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen H. Pixley of Courtland; a son, Army 
Brig. Gen. B.M. Herring Jr. of Fort Steward, Ga.; two sisters, Mildred Herring 
and Kathryn H. Austin, both of Savannah, Ga., two brothers, Emory L. Herring 
and Richard S. Herring, both of Vidalia, Ga.; and six grandchildren.
