All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JESSE ANDREWS JACKSON Jesse Andrews Jackson died at his home in North High Street Saturday, March 14, after an illness of many months. Mr. Jackson was a native of Murfreesboro, N.C, the son of the late Jesse Andrews Jackson and Mrs. Rebecca Van Shoick Jackson, both of whom were originally from New Jersey. Moving to Franklin in 1881, he was known and esteemed here for his exceptionally fine traits of character and exemplary life. He had the distinction of serving his church as steward for 52 years, becoming an official of High Street M.E. Church at the age of 18 when the local church was a part of the old Southampton Circuit and he was the only steward in the local congregation. He was a studious and well-informed man, living a quiet, unostentatious life and numbering many friends. Surviving his are his wife, Mrs. Flora Bryant Jackson; two sons, Jesse A. Jackson, Jr. of Grantsville, West Va., and Edgar B. Jackson of Norfolk; one daughter, Mrs. B.M. Trotter of Norfolk; eight grandchildren; four nephews and two nieces, the children of the late Mrs. Joseph T. Weede of this town. Another sister, Miss Florie Jackson, who made her home with him, died several years ago. Funeral services, attended by a large assemblage, were conducted from the Methodist Church Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock by his Pastor, Rev. Henry W. Davis, assisted by a former Pastor, Rev. Roscoe Jones of Portsmouth, and Rev. R.D. Stephenson of the Baptist Church. Burial was made in the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery, the pallbearers being: J.B. Gay, B.L. Holt, J.F. Bryant, Jr., J.W.B. Thompson, C.V. McGehee of Hopewell and three of his nephews, Jesse and Willie Weede of Franklin and Charles M. Weede of Akron, Ohio. Honorary bearers were his fellow stewards of High Street M.E. Church.
