PAUL JONES DIES AT HOME HERE LAST NIGHT John Paul Jones died at his home in Clay Street last night following an illness of many weeks and after a period of ill health for more than a year. He was 65 years of age, the son of the late Rev. James E. and Mrs. Eugenia Gardner Jones of South Quay, Nansemond County. On January 31, 1894, he married Miss Odelle* Rawls, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rawls of Nansemond County. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Robert E. Jones of Concord, N.C., and two daughters, Mrs. P.E. Darden of this town and Mrs. H. Wayland Stephenson of Ivor, and three grandsons, Robert, Branson and John Paul Jones, Jr. of Concord. He also leaves two brothers P.A. Jones and W.A. Jones of South Quay, and three sisters, Mrs. J.M. Robertson of Norfolk, Mrs. C.R. Rawls and Mrs. H.J. Lawrence of Nansemond County, besides a large and prominent family connection here and in Nansemond County. Mr. Jones had been with the Camp Manufacturing Company for 45 years as a timber estimator, being one of their most valued and useful employees. He had lived in Franklin ever since he began his work with the Camp Company, and was admired and esteemed by our people as a good citizen, quiet, unostentatious, upright and honorable in all of the relations of life. Joining South Quay Baptist Church as a young man where his honored father was Pastor for many years, he later moved his membership to the Franklin Baptist Church where he was a loyal and consistent communicant, and was a member of the Bruner Bible Class of that church. He was also affiliated with Franklin Lodge No. 51, Knights of Pythias. Funeral rites will be held from his late residence tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon at 2 o’clock, conducted by his Pastor, Rev. R.E. Stephenson, assisted by Rev. E. Norfleet Gardner of Dunn, N.C. Burial will be made in the family plot at Poplar Spring Cemetery. The pallbearers will be: B.L. Holt, J.A. Williams, P.R. Camp, Jas. L. Camp, Jr., L.B. Norfleet, Clifford A. Cutchins, G.G. McCann and E.T. Fitzgerald.
