JONES, 81, DIES AT FRANKLIN FRANKLIN - Dec. 24 - Elijah P. Jones, 81, president of Jones-Hayes department store here, died Thursday at the home of his son, Emerson P. Jones. He was a director of the Merchants and Farmers Bank, a member of the Rotary Club. He was a member of Franklin Congregation Christian Church. Also surviving are two grandchildren. Funeral rites will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Franklin Congregational Christian Church, with burial in Poplar Springs Cemetery. ****************************************************************************** ELIJAH PHILIP JONES MERCHANT OVER HALF CENTURY, E. PHILIP JONES DIED DECEMBER 24 Elijah Philip Jones, 81, prominent Franklin merchant, died Thursday morning at the home of his son, Emerson P. Jones, on Meadow Lane after a short illness. He had lived with his son the last several years. He was the husband of the late Mrs. Naomi Tall Jones and the son of Elijah and Ann Rebecca Darden Jones of Nansemond County. Mr. Jones came to Franklin at age 19. He was associated with Jones-Hayes Co., mercantile store, and was president at the time of his death. He was a director of Merchants and Farmers Bank, one of the early members of the Rotary Club, a member of the Franklin Knights of Pythias, and also a former member of the Virginia National Guard prior to the Spanish-American War. He was one of the oldest member of Franklin Congregational Christian Church, and a life deacon. Surviving are one son, Emerson P. Jones, Jr., of Franklin, and nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held at Franklin Congregational Christian Church Saturday at 2:30 p.m. by the Rev. Tucker G. Humphries, pastor, and the Rev. John G. Truitt of Elon College, N.C. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Pallbearers were William Thomas Jones, Dr. Darden W. Jones, R. Ellsworth Jones, W. Tall Jones, James C. Jones and Elman Scott.
