EMELINE JOHNSON Mrs. Emeline Johnson, widow of William Johnson, departed this life Sunday morning, September 5, 1920, in the 79th year of her age, at her youngest daughter's Mrs. B.F. Briggs of Courtland. She joined the Methodist church at Clarksbury in Southampton county in early life, and lived a consistent Christian life to the day of her death. She enjoyed the old-time religion and the hymns of the olden days were the sweetest music to her soul. Six daughters and two sons survive her as follows: Mrs. C.S. Newton, Mrs. W.T. Ivey, Mrs. J.T. Banty, Mrs. N.T. Smith, Mrs. C.E. Smith and Mrs. B.F. Briggs; Messrs. J.E. and H.H. Johnson all of Southampton county. One daughter Mrs. J.S. Worrell, preceded her to the grave. She leaves thirty-five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The interment took place in Boykins cemetery Monday afternoon, September 6th, Rev. J.E. Brooks, pastor of Courtland M.E. Church , assisted by Rev. Porter Hardy of the Methodist church and Rev. H. P. Dalton of the Baptist Church of Boykins, conducted the services. The active pallbearers were her two sons, J.E. and H.H. and her sons-in-law, B.F. Briggs, N.T. Smith, N.T. Banty, and W.T. Ivey; honorary, W.J. Story, E. Whitfield, Dr. E.F. Reese, A.E. Briggs, Dr. J.M. Bland, B.F. Britt, H.E. Smith, H. Jernigan, J.D. Ferguson, J.T. Worrell, H.L. Smith and Moody Barnes. Some of the favorite hymns of the deceased "I Will Follow Where He Leads Me", and "I Have Anchored My Soul in the Haven of Rest" were sung with touching effect, just before the casket was borne from the home and at the grave by her grandchildren, Inez, Hazel, and Samuel Smith, Raymond Newton, Willie Ivey, Anna and Frances Sammons and Mrs. Moody Barnes, accompanied by Mrs. W.J. Story. The floral offerings were beautiful and numerous, attesting the tender love and sympathy of many friends and loved ones.
