JOHNSON IS HURT LAST SATURDAY, SUCCUMBS ON TUESDAY South Quay Bridge-keeper Hit By Automobile on Bridge Last Saturday. Frank Holland Johnson, 69, a resident of the South Quay community near Franklin, was fatally injured when struck by an automobile on the South Quay Bridge last Saturday afternoon at about 4 o’clock. Mr. Johnson was taken to Raiford Hospital here and lived until Tuesday afternoon, dying about 1:30 from contusion of the brain and other injuries. It was reported that Mr. Johnson, who was bridge keeper at South Quay, stepped out of the little control house at the Nansemond County end of the bridge, and walked directly into the path of a car driven by Johnnie H. Lawrence, 31 year old colored man. Lawrence told authorities that he could not avoid striking Mr. Johnson because a truck was approaching and he had to keep to his right-hand side of the bridge. He was headed toward Nansemond. The arrest was made by State Trooper D.C. Udell of Franklin, who booked Lawrence on a charge of involuntary manslaughter. Mr. Johnson was a well-known resident of his community, where he had spent his life. He was the son of the late Robert and Frances Vaughan Johnson of Nansemond and was a member of South Quay Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Addie Everett Johnson; five daughters, Mrs. Edith Lee Kello of Courtland, Mrs. Lucy L. Scott of Franklin, Mrs. Vince Shortt of New Castle, Ind., Mrs. Walter W. Rangley of Franklin and Mrs. Winston E. Wallace of Alexandria; five grandchildren, three brothers, George Tom Johnson of Franklin, Dr. J.R.L. Johnson of Williamsburg and Jesse B. Johnson of Franklin, and several nephews. Services were held from the residence Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock by the Rev. W.L. Lumpkin of Holland, assisted by the Rev. R.D. Stephenson of Franklin and the Rev. C.V. Morris of Capron. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery here, pallbearers being Jesse Johnson, Jr., Charles Johnson, Lawrence Johnson, Bruce Johnson, J.B. Johnson, Joseph and Thomas Brickhouse and Lee Everett.
