JOHNSON MURFREESBORO - Funeral services for C.F. Johnson, prominent Emporia, Va. merchant and business man who died Sunday in the Roanoke Rapids Hospital after a brief illness, were conducted at the home of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Hattie W. Johnson at Emporia, Tuesday afternoon. Interment was in the Johnson family cemetery near Murfreesboro. The Rev. J.C. Dugger, pastor of the Emporia Methodist churches, assisted by the Rev. Fletcher Ford, the Rev. Mr. Alvis and the Rev. J.M. Duncan of Murfreesboro officiated at the services. Mr. Johnson was born May 28, 1872 in Southampton County, Va., the son of the late Henry H. and Mahalah [sic; Mahalia] Woodward Johnson and spent his early life in Hertford County. At the age of 25 he went to Emporia, Va., to live and after being employed with the Atlantic and Danville Railroad Company, he entered the mercantile business with his brother, S.H. Johnson. Following his brother's death, Mr. Johnson continued the business under the firm name of C.F. Johnson and Co., until his death. For 25 years he was a member of the Emporia town council and was a director of the First National Bank at the time of its organization. He was secretary and a member of the board of directors of the Independent Publishing Company, Inc., having been one of the organizers of the Independent in 1909. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. J.G. Liverman of Murfreesboro and a number of nieces and nephews.
