JAMES SAMUEL JOHNSON SR.

   COURTLAND - A funeral service for James Samuel Johnson Sr., 72, was held 
Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in Riverside Cemetery by the Revs. Edmund Ellis and 
Wilson Conwell. Wright Funeral Home was in charge.

   Johnson died Sunday in Southampton Memorial Hospital.

   A native of Edgecombe County, N.C., he was a retired farmer.

   He was a member of Courtland Baptist Church.

   Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Linda J. Conwell of Courtland and 
Mrs. Owedia Miller of Chesapeake; two sons, Robert Ernie Johnson of Norfolk 
and J. Samuel Johnson Jr. of Richmond; five sisters, Mrs. Debbie Wilkins, 
Mrs. Susie Howell, Mrs. Rountree, Mrs. Annie Mae Britt and Mrs. Linwood 
Pearce, all of Holland Station, Suffolk, and Mrs. Minnie Hill of Florida; 
a brother, Wade S. Johnson of Holland; and nine grandchildren.
