JOSEPH E. JOHNSON 

SOUTHAMPTON OFFICIAL DIES 

Joseph E. Johnson, administrator of Southampton County for the past decade, 
died in his home Sunday afternoon of an apparent heart attack.  He was 58.

Mr. Johnson, who retired in 1974 as an Army colonel, had been adminstrative 
assistant to the superintendent of Southampton County schools for two years 
before he became administrator of his native county.

Mr. Johnson and George Bryant of Boykins have been the only adminstrators 
of Southampton County.

Mr. Johnson was under doctor's care for an inoperable heart condition.

"I was stunned," said Rowland L. Taylor, who worked under Mr. Johnson for 
nine years.  "It was something we all had known was possible, but it 
completely floored us."

Mr. Johnson attended Southampton County schools and graduated from Syracuse 
University in New York state.

He is survived by his wife, Janet, and his daughter, Jan an attorney in 
Washington.
