Funeral services for John Henry Johnson, Sr., 71, who died Thursday afternoon, September 13, were conducted Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in the chapel of W. J. M. Holland and sons Funeral Home with Rev. Clyde Fields, pastor of Hunterdale Christian Church, officiating. Mr. Johnson, a native of Southampton County, died in Petersburg Hospital after an illness of several months. He was the son of the late Frank and Maggie E. Johnson and the husband of the late Lillian Blythe Johnson of Southampton County. He was a member of Bethel Friends Church near Franklin. Surviving him are two daughters, Mrs. Marion Louis Hatton of Petersburg and Mrs. Margaret Virginia Crumpler of Holland; one son, John Henry Johnson, Jr., of Norfolk; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Sidney L. Johnson of Suffolk and Claude R. Johnson of Walters; one sister, Mrs. Maggie Brewer of Skippers, and a number of nieces and nephews. Burial was in the family cemetery near Sedley. Active pallbearers were Paul Johnson, James Daughtrey, Elijah Joyner, Cecil Womble, R. R. Lankford, William Councill, Charles Urquhart and Bernard Johnson.
