All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ LEMMA MOSS GARRETT JOHNSON Funeral services for Mrs. Lemma Garrett Johnson, 61, well-known resident of Franklin, who died Saturday, September 15, about 8 p.m., in Raiford Memorial Hospital after an illness of many months, were conducted Monday at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of the W.J.M. Holland and Sons Funeral Home. Rev. Ira D. Hudgins, pastor of the Franklin Baptist Church, officiated. Mrs. Johnson, a native of Cumberland County, came to Southampton County in 1915 as a teacher in the Webb School near Delaware and later married the late James A. Johnson of the Franklin community. She was a member of High Street Methodist Church and an alumnus of State Teachers College, Farmville, now Longwood College. She was a former president of the Franklin Parent-Teacher Association, and in more recent years was connected with the Welfare Department of Southampton County. Surviving are two sons, James A. Johnson, Jr., of Richmond and John William Johnson of Savannah, Ga.; two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson Wright of Smithfield and Mrs. Mary Winston Johnson Briggs of Franklin; three grandchildren; three brothers, Douglas Garrett of Hopewell; William H. Garrett of Cumberland and Charles F. Garrett of Canton, Miss.; two sister, Mrs. R.T. Tompkins of Suffolk and Mrs. R.E. Amis of Virgilina. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Active pallbearers were J.T. Vaughan, Robert R. Faison, George Watkins, W.R. Emmons, Cecil C. Vaughan, 3rd, B.T. Watkins, William H. Cutchin and H.G. Cobb, Sr. ****************************************************************************** LEMMA MOSS GARRETT JOHNSON FRANKLIN - Sept. 16 - Mrs. Lemma Garrett Johnson, 61, died Saturday at a Franklin hospital. A native of Cumberland County, she moved to Southampton County in 1915 as a school teacher. She was the widow of James A. Johnson. Surviving are two sons, James A. Johnson of Richmond and John Williams Johnson of Savannah, Ga.; two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth J. Wright of Smithfield and Mrs. Mary Winston Johnson Briggs of Franklin; three brothers, Douglas Garrett of Hopewell, William Garrett of Cumberland and Charles F. Garrett of Canton, Miss., and two sisters, Mrs. R.T. Tompkins of Suffolk and Mrs. R.E. Amis of Virgilina. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at W.J.M. Holland and Sons Funeral Home, with burial in Poplar Spring Cemetery.
