JOHNSON KILLED IN GRADE CROSSING CRASH NEAR NEWSOMS Southampton had its first tragic grade-crossing accident Sunday morning when Seaboard passenger train No. 11 struck a Ford touring car at Kindred's cut, two miles west of Newsoms, completely demolishing the car, killing R.O. Johnson and seriously injuring W.R. Gray. The train was nearly two hours late and was running at a rate of 45 miles an hour, according to the engineer, when the accident occurred. Mr. Johnson of the Boykins community and Mr. Gray of the Newsoms neighborhood were the only occupants of the car, and the machine must have stalled on the railroad track, from the best available reports of the accident. The car was thoroughly shattered and Johnson, who was driving, lived only a few minutes. Both of Gray's legs were broken and he sustained other bodily injuries. The unfortunate men were placed on the train to be taken to the hospital at Roanoke Rapids, N.C., but Johnson died just before Gumberry was reached and the body was taken from the train at Weldon and returned to Boykins for burial. Mr. Gray was taken to the Roanoke Rapids hospital, where his condition is regarded as most serious. Funeral services for Mr. Johnson were held from the Boykins Baptist Church, of which the deceased was a member, on Tuesday afternoon at 5 o'clock, Rev. F.B. Handley conducting the service and interment following in Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins. He is survived by his widow and three children, who have the universal sympathy of the neighborhood in which they live.
