He was the son of the late Richard and Chatta* Barnes Johnson of Southampton County. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nannie Carter Johnson; five daughters: Mrs. J.L. Pope of Branchville, Mrs. D.R. Vick, Mrs. James A. Ferguson, and Mrs. Harvey J. Porter of Newsoms, and Mrs. D.C. Manry of Capron; one son, Samuel Hugh Johnson, Jr., of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., a step-daughter, Mrs. B.C. Gray of Newsoms and two step-sons, J.H. and S.H. Story of Roanoke Rapids, besides a number of grandchildren. Services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock at the grave by his pastor, the Rev. F.B. Handley. Music was furnished by a group from the Baptist Church. They sang three of Mr. Johnson’s favorite hymns, "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder," "Will There Be Any Stars In My Crown" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." Pallbearers were James A. Ferguson, Harvey J. Porter, B.C. Gray and J.L. Pope. Honorary pallbearers were relatives. Burial took place in Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins.
