SAMUEL HUGH JOHNSON

   Samuel Hugh Johnson, 64, died at his home near Newsoms, early Monday morning, 
March 4, after an illness of several years.  He was the son of the late Richard 
and Chatta* Barnes Johnson of Southampton County.

   He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nannie Carter Johnson; five daughters: Mrs. 
J.L. Pope of Branchville, Mrs. D.R. Vick, Mrs. James A. Ferguson, and Mrs. 
Harvey J. Porter of Newsoms, and Mrs. D.C. Manry of Capron; one son, Samuel Hugh 
Johnson, Jr., of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., a step-daughter, Mrs. B.C. Gray of 
Newsoms and two step-sons, J.H. and S.H. Story of Roanoke Rapids, besides a 
number of grandchildren.

   Services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock at the grave by his 
pastor, the Rev. F.B. Handley.  Music was furnished by a group from the Baptist 
Church.  They sang three of Mr. Johnson’s favorite hymns, "When the Roll is 
Called Up Yonder," "Will There Be Any Stars In My Crown" and "What a Friend We 
Have in Jesus."  Pallbearers were James A. Ferguson, Harvey J. Porter, B.C. Gray 
and J.L. Pope.  Honorary pallbearers were relatives.  Burial took place in 
Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins.
