All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ SAMUEL PETTAWAY JOHNSON Samuel Pettaway Johnson, 80, prominent merchant and farmer of Drewryville, died at his home on Sunday night, March 16, after a brief illness. The deceased was the son of the late Zachary Taylor and Caroline Joyner Johnson of the Burdette community, and the husband of Mrs. Blanche Westbrook Johnson, who preceded him in death 24 years ago. He was a member of the Drewryville Methodist Church and of the Courtland Masonic Lodge. Surviving him are two sons, Samuel P. Johnson, Jr., of Petersburg and Owen W. Johnson, Sr., of Drewryville; three daughters, Misses Elizabeth C. and Nelle M. Johnson of Drewryville and Mrs. George Hinson Parker, Jr., of Franklin; seven grandchildren; two brothers, G.L. H. Johnson of Danville and Ryland P. Johnson of Miami, Fla.; and one sister, Mrs. Lelia J. Foster of Ridgeway, Henry County. Funeral services for Mr. Johnson were held at the Drewryville Methodist Church on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, with the pastor, Rev. J.T. Cassell, officiating, assisted by Revs. L.O. Wright and R.H. Marks, former pastors. Burial was in the Drewryville Cemetery. The active pallbearers were L.B. Claud, R.D. Claud, James A. Grizzard, G.W. Leigh, F.E. Pope, Samuel E. Pope, T.W. Thomas and Edward M. Trice. The honorary pallbearers were friends of the family.
