SARAH JOHNSON, 97, BURIED SUNDAY Mrs. Sarah J. Johnson, 97*, died suddenly August 25, at the home of her son J.F. Johnson, near Ivor, in Southampton County. She was a lifelong resident of the county, and a member of Mill Swamp Baptist Church. Surviving, besides the son, are four daughters, Mrs. J.M. Owney, of Wakefield; Mrs. J.L. Britt of Dendron; Mrs. Sallie J. Bailey of Portsmouth and Mrs. C.H. Pittman of Ivor. The body was taken from the Roberts & Johnson Funeral Home in Smithfield to the Johnson residence Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Funeral services were conducted at 3:30 p.m. at the grave in Mill swamp Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. L.E. Holzbach, pastor of Mill Swamp Church officiated assisted by the Rev. Rowland P. Wagner of Norfolk. The Mill Swamp Church choir sung "Abide With Me: and "In the Sweet Bye and Bye." Pallbearers were Kenith [sic] Jones, George L. Savedge, Tom Hill, William Mumford, Ernest Wells and Charles Ramsey. Members of the Men's Bible Class of the Mill Swamp Church were honorary pallbearers. Sarah J.* (COOK; Mrs. Benjamin F.) Her D.Cert. #18240 (B&I #18), gives Sarah Hane, b. 27 Nov 1848, and gives her parents incorrectly, as Benjamin Cook and Nancy Horne; the informant was her son J.F. [James]. Her parents are also given incorrectly, as Wm. & Sarah Branch, in the Southampton Co. M.Reg. 1853-1872 (p. 23 #12). This was an error by the clerk, who failed to record the marriage of Benjamin Johnson's brother Jeremiah J. Johnson to widow Sarah A. Vick, dt/o Wm. & Sarah Branch. Several of Sarah's half-siblings by that union are buried in a BRITT-COOK family cemetery, off Hwy. 460, between Zuni & Ivor.
