All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ WILLIAM HENRY JENKINS William Henry Jenkins, one of the best-known citizens of Franklin and Southampton County, died at his home in North High Street Friday night, January 6, in the 74th year of his life. He had been in ill health for several months following a stroke of paralysis sustained about two years ago. Mr. Jenkins was born at Sunbeam, this county, then known as "Joynersville" at the old Dyer homestead, on October 14, 1854, the son of John B. Jenkins, a native of Gates County, N.C. and of Mrs. Margaret Daughtrey Jenkins of Nansemond county. On January 5, 1879, he married Miss Addie Lawrence of this county, daughter of Willis Lawrence, Mrs. Jenkins dying June 11, 1886. There are two sons of this union, W. Crawford Jenkins of Norfolk and J. Willard Jenkins of New York. On December 10, 1889, he married Miss Henrietta Rawls of Isle of Wight County who survives him with two children, William H. Jenkins Jr. of Philadelphia and Miss Sarah Jenkins of Portsmouth. He had made his home in Franklin for nearly 50 years, and much of this time had served his district and county acceptably as Justice of the Peace, being esteemed for his integrity, impartiality and even-handed justice. He was a man of strong and outspoken convictions but numbered a host of friends who admired and esteemed him as an honorable and loyal friend. He was a charter member of Franklin Lodge No. 51, Knights of Pythias, organized here in the year 1879. Funeral services were held from his late residence Saturday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock by Rev. R.D. Stephenson of the Baptist Church. Interment following in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The body bearers were: Claude J. Edwards, R.J. Tucker, W.A. Jones, A.S. Johnson, J. Edwards Moyler, J.P. King, J. Linwood Edwards and Geo. O. Watkins. The honorary pallbearers were: J.B. Vaughan, R.B. Eure, J.E. Lawrence, R.E.L. Watkins, W.W. Edwards, M.H. Moore, W.C. Watson, E. Frank Story, W.M. Cobb, C.F. Whitfield, W.O. Bogart, R.A. Pretlow, J.A. Pretlow, and Col. Jno. B. Pinner of Suffolk.
