He was the husband of Mrs. Emma Story Joyner and was the son of the late James B. and Mrs. Allie Harcum Joyner of Southampton County. He was a member of Sycamore Baptist Church. Survivors, besides his wife, are one daughter, Mrs. Carrie Lee Joyner Wood of Franklin; a sister, Mrs. Elsie Edwards of Norfolk; a brother, James Nurney Joyner of Petersburg; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at the W.J.M. Holland and Sons Funeral Home by the Rev. Thomas Mabe, pastor of the Sycamore Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.
