Joyner was born May, 1845, and died January 9, 1920, at the age of 74, after a brief illness of 5 days. Although an invalid for 5 years, yet the suddeness of his death was a shock to the family. In his feeble condition both the medical skill and the faithful attention of loved ones was all in vain. A deep cold contracted on Sunday settled on his lungs, his condition gradually growing worse until the end came at 2 o'clock, Friday. The deceased was a member of the Urquhart-Gillette Camp of Confederate Veterans, having heard the call to arms in the War Between the States at the age of 16, and was a consistent member of Whitehead's M.E. Church. A good neighbor, upright, honest, industrious, conscientious in his dealings with his fellowman, and patient amid the burdens of his afflictions - these are characteristics by which those best acquainted with him will cherish his memory. "Long days and nights he bore his pain. To wait for cure was all in vain. But God who knoweth all things best, Did cease his pain and give him rest." He is survived by his wife, five sons, one daughter and several grandchildren. He was laid to rest Saturday, January 10, at 3 o'clock in the family burying ground, the burial services being conducted by his pastor, Rev. S.N. Hurst. A special choir sang "Jesus Lover of My Soul," "The Sweet Bye and Bye" and "Asleep in Jesus." The following acted as pallbearers: active, B.B., W.T., J.L. and F.T. Joyner, G.F. Pope and Julian Dickens; honorary, S.T. Pope, P.E. Knight, G.W. Bradshaw, O.S. Pope, Jas. T. Gillette, J.R. Dickens, Walter Britt, R.T. Andrews, R.B. Story, G.W. Burgess, R.N. Applewhite and E.B.
