All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ ELISHA JOYNER Elisha Joyner, Oldest Man in Isle of Wight, Dies in Walters, VA Was 93 year old and is Survived By Several Children and thirty two grandchildren Suffolk, VA., 17 Dec. - Elisha Joyner, the oldest and one of the best known citizens of Isle of Wight county, died yesterday at his home in Walters, Va., in the ninety-third year of his age. Mr. Joyner was born in Southampton county, Virginia, April 26, 1822, the only son of Joshua and Mason Joyner. He was first married to Miss Beady Carr, who died July 9, 1882.* By this union there are five children who survive, J.E.T. Joyner and Mrs. R.H. Joyner* of Walters, Va.; Mrs. N.T. Bradshaw of Nurneyville, Va.; Mrs. G.W. Mumford, Petersburg, Va.; M.W. Joyner, Suffolk, Va.; thirty-two grand children, twenty two great-grand children. Mr. Joyner was married the second time to Miss Sallie W. Luter, in March 1889, who survives him. He served for two months in the Civil War, standing picket on the James river. After that he was too old to serve and was relieved on account of age. He was one of the charter members of Mount Carmel organized in 1871. Of the twenty charter members only four are still living, Mills Britt, Rev. H.H. Butler, Mrs. Vandelia Watkins and Mrs. R.J. Cox. The services were conducted at Mount Carmel Christian Church by Rev. Dr. W.W. Staley of the Suffolk Christian church, and Rev. W.A. Hall of the Presbyterian church. During the hour of the funeral all of the stores, places of business and the school at Walters were closed. Mr. Joyner was a man who attended to his own business and was singularly free from bad habits or associations. After a long life of nearly a century, he expressed a wish before he died, "to go home." The active pall bearers were selected from the grand children of the deceased and were J.F. Joyner, Otis Joyner, Richardson Joyner, S.E. Joyner, F.B. Bradshaw, L.F. Bradshaw, Willie Bradshaw, Leon Lewis. Honorary - Joe Joyner, Dr. T.G. Bradshaw, J.T. Bradshaw, A.L. Holland, J.M. Ballard, G.A. Mumford, R.E. Bland, Mills Britt, W. E. Bland, J.G. Duck, J.H. English, R.J. Cox, C.E. Williams, R.T. Frazier. The body was interred in the family cemetery*. Mr. Joyner, during his life time, saw the coming in of railroads, telegraph, electric lights, telephones, automobiles and every modern device for transportation of persons or messages. He saw this country three times involved in war, and followed the current events of the day, up to a short time before his death. It gives in error his wife as Beatrice CARR JOYNER. Her name was Obedience (Beady) CARR JOYNER. In the Elisha JOYNER Family Bible she is always referred to as Beady. She was named for her grandmother Obedience (Beady) ENGLISH, wife of Samuel CORBITT. (pvm) The IoW Co. Va. Death Records state she d. 15 Jul 1882 of congestive Chill. The family Bible gives she d. 19 Jul 1882. (pvm) The obit above gives in error she d. 9 Jul 1882. The obit also gives in error his son Richard Henry JOYNER as Mrs. R.H. Joyner.
