Joyner, the son of the late Elisha and Mrs. Jane Joyner, was born in Southampton County January 4, 1849, and died October 16, 1928, his earthly existence covering a period of 79 years, 9 months and 12 days. On March 28, 1872, he married Miss Anna V. Bracy* and this union was blessed with seven children, six of whom survived; James, W.L., R.H. J.R. and E.E. Joyner and Miss Minnie Joyner, all of the Franklin community. In addition to this large family of children, Mr. Joyner is survived by four grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends, who greatly regret his going. He also leaves a brother, Matthew L. Joyner, and was a brother of the late Rev. Thomas Joyner, a well-known and beloved Christian minister who preached in Southampton and near-by counties and founded Johnson’s Grove Christian Church. Two of his brothers, Joe and Joshua Joyner, lost their lives in service for the South in the War Between the States. For 48 years he served the church he loved. He was the oldest deacon of the church and for many years served faithfully as treasurer and trustee and superintendent of the Sunday school. Those who knew him best and loved him most tenderly often called him "Uncle Scrap" and to his friends and neighbors he meant much. His daily living was said to be an inspiration to all who knew him His life was a round of activities which were ever pleasing to his Lord. In the absence of an ordained minister, he conducted numerous funerals and I believe he has the record of having visited more sick and needy people than any man I have ever known. Not many days before his death he said that his life was a happy review of experiences in which he had visited and comforted others and as he looked back on all those days gone by, he was filled to rejoicing. He loved the church. His faithfulness was never lacking. He conducted prayer meetings in church and homes throughout the community. To his wife, his brother, his children and his friends, his church extends its heartfelt sympathies. The good men do ever live in the hearts of those they leave behind, and the fragrance of the life that his passed into the great beyond will linger on and on so long as we whose lives he touched shall live.
