All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ LUCY LEIGH PRESSON JOYNER INJURIES RECEIVED IN ACCIDENT FATAL TO COURTLAND LADY Funeral services for Mrs. Lucy Presson Joyner, 70, of Courtland were conducted from the residence of the deceased on Friday morning, August 15, at 11:30 o’clock by her pastor, Rev. Percy D. White of the Courtland Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. Lee Richard of Norton, Va. Interment followed in Riverside Cemetery at Courtland. The pallbearers were S.H. Booth, Burnell Booth, Edgar Stephenson, A.B. Cobb, T.B. Bell, David Lee Godwin, Rufus Darden, and A.W. Lindsay. Mrs. Joyner’s death occurred on Thursday, August 14, in Lakeview Hospital, Suffolk, the result of injuries received late the afternoon before in an automobile accident between Courtland and Dendron, according to the State police. She was driving alone from her home to Dendron, when she apparently lost control of the vehicle which left the road and crashed into a tree. Both of her legs were broken and her lung was injured. The deceased was the widow of William Henry Joyner. She is survived by a daughter, Miss Ethel Lee Joyner of Courtland; a son, William Henry Joyner of Washington; a step-daughter, Mrs. Frank Boykin of Richmond; and a stepson, Otis M. Joyner of Courtland. Mrs. Joyner was for many years employed in the Courtland post office. Lucy Leigh (PRESSON; Mrs. William H.) Rather, Joel Junius PRESSON, son of Joshua & Lucy Caroline HOLLOMAN PRESSON, 1m. their mother Martha Alice BOOTH, daughter of BOOTH, 7 Mar 1871 in Sussex Co. He 2m. Ellen F. HARGRAVE, daughter of Samuel & Matilda (ROGERS) HARGRAVE, 2 Nov 1884 in Sussex Co. Lucy applied to the War Dept. 21 Sep 1934, for a headstone for their father, a Confederate veteran, buried in a private cemetery near Ivor; it was to be shipped to J. Henley PRESSON, Wakefield P.O. The stone now stands in Rocky Hock Methodist Church Cemetery, in Surry Co., where Henley is also buried.
