He was known as an upright Christian gentleman and honest with his dealings with man. He was the son of the late Richard and Mrs. Anne Jackson Joyner, both of this county. Funeral services were conducted from the home Thursday afternoon by his Pastor, Rev. R.H. Marks and interment was made in the Capron Cemetery. "Shall We Gather at the River" and "Sometime We’ll Understand" were sung by the local choirs, assisted by P.E. Knight of Courtland. Mrs. C.G. Johnson and Mrs. H.L. Bain Sang "We’ll Meet Again." The casket was covered with a spray of Easter lilies and white carnations. There were many other beautiful floral tributes. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Dolly Drake Joyner; two sons, Samuel W., Jr., and Charles Joyner; one daughter, Miss Rachel Joyner of the State Teacher College, Farmville; two sisters, Mrs. J.M. Nicholson of the community and Mrs. Eva Fuller of Hopewell; four brothers, W.E., T.J. and J.H. Joyner all of this county and P.L. Joyner of Norfolk. Pallbearers were: G.L. Cooke and S.T. Whitehorne of Richmond, Sam W. Griffin of Edgerton, E.D. Barham and Mr. Mitchell of Norfolk, J.C. Bell of Portsmouth, W.P. Gillette and W.H. Story of Capron.
