All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ WILLIAM HENRY JOYNER William Henry Joyner of Courtland died at his home Saturday night, February 25. He had been an invalid for the past 10 years. Mr. Joyner was born in Southampton county May 12, 1860, joining Johnson’s Grove Christian Church as a boy and where he was a life-long member. He was active in public affairs of his county, serving as Deputy Sheriff and Justice of the Peace of Berlin-Ivor District for a number of years. Mr. Joyner was married three times - in 1890 to Miss Sallie Wills who died in 1897 and to this union were born two children, Otis M. Joyner and Iola Joyner (now Mrs. F.L. Boykins). His second marriage in 1901 was to Miss Christina Saunders who died in 1902. In 1907 Mr. Joyner married Miss Lucy Leigh Presson who survived him with two children, Miss Ethel Leigh Joyner and W.H. Joyner, Jr. Funeral services were held from his late residence Monday afternoon, conducted by a former Pastor, Rev. J.M. Roberts of Windsor, assisted by Rev. H.F. Turner of the Courtland M.E. Church. The Methodist choir sang, "God Will Take Care of You;" Mrs. C.W. Parker and Mrs. T.P. Gilbert sang "Sweet Peace the Gift of God’s Love" and at the grave "Asleep in Jesus" was sung by the choir. Interment was made in Riverside Cemetery, the active pallbearers being: Dr. I.P. Gilbert, E. Whitfield, Edgar Stephenson, H.D. Babb, W.K. Whitfield, H.A. Gillette, R.T Whitfield, and Leonard Boothe. Honorary pallbearers were selected from a large list of friends of the family.
