Joyner Dead at 69 SMITHFIELD - Wilbur Dixon Joyner, 69, chairman of the Board of Supervisors of Isle of wight County, died early today in Obici Memorial Hospital after heart attack. Mr. Joyner, who had been in ill health for several months, returned home yesterday after a short stay at Nag's Head, N.C. He was stricken last night at his home near Windsor and died at 4 a.m. Funeral services will be conducted at Bullock Funeral Home, Smithfield. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery at Sedley. He was a prominent mercahnt, [sic] farmer and peanut buyer in Isle of Wight County for a number of years. Besides being a member of the Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors for the past 34 years, he was also chairman of Isle of Wight County Welfare Board and was an active member of the Democratic party in the county. He was als [sic] a member of the board of directors of the Bank of Smithfield and the board of directors of raiford [sic] Hospital in Franklin. He was a member of Central Hill Baptist Church, the Seward Bible Class of the church and had served as superintendent of the Sunday School and a deacon member for a number of years. He was a World War I Veteran and was a member of the George F. Dashiell American Legion Post in Smithfield. He was the son of the James Alex Joyner and Martha Faircloth Joyner of Southampton County and had lived in Isle of Wright [sic] County for the past 40 years. He is survived by his wife, Ms. Mary Bradshaw Joyner of the home; a daughter, Mrs. C. P. Edwards of Isle of Wight County, a son, W. B. [sic] Joyner Jr. of Isle of Wight County, a brother, brother, S. Lindley Joyner, of Jarrat [sic], two sisters, Mrs. John C. Bradshaw of Franklin and Mrs. John Duke of Carrsville and and three grandchildren. [obit accompanied by photographic portrait, labeled "Wilbur Dixon Joyner"; scanned copy available (mh)] ****************************************************************************** WILBUR DIXON JOYNER Funeral services for Wilbur Dixon Joyner, 69 years old, who died in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital July 5 after a short illness, were held July 7, at 2 p.m. in the Bullock Funeral Home, Smithfield, with the burial in Rosemont Cemetery at Sedley. The Rev. Joseph R. Darden, pastor of Central Hill Baptist Church, and the Rev. Carey L. Steele, pastor of Woodlawn Baptist Church, conducted the services. Pallbearers were Harry G. Dashiell, Hugh Gwaltney, Shirley T. Holland, A. Dunston Johnson, Frank E. Pulley, Richard E. Railey, J. Rowell Seward, A.E.S. Stephens, Harold C. Taylor and Russell L. Thompson. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Seward Bible Class of Central Hill Baptist Church, and friends of the family. Mr. Joyner was a native of Southampton County, the son of the late Alexander James Joyner and Martha Faircloth Joyner, but had lived at Central Hill in Isle of Wight County for the past 40 years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Bradshaw Joyner, a daughter, Mrs. C.P. Edwards, a son, Wilbur D. Joyner, Jr., and three grandchildren, all of Central Hill; two sisters, Mrs. John C. Bradshaw, of Franklin, and Mrs. John F. Duke, Jr. of Carrsville, and one brother, S. Lindley Joyner, of Jarratt. A merchant, farmer and peanut buyer, Mr. Joyner was a member of the Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors for many years, and its chairman for the past 34 years. He was also chairman of the Board of Public Welfare of Isle of Wight County, and a former chairman of the county’s Democratic executive committee. Mr. Joyner was for many years superintendent of the Sunday School of the Central Hill Baptist Church where he was a member. He formerly served as a director of the Bank of Smithfield, the Farmers Bank of Windsor, and the Raiford Memorial Hospital. A veteran of World War I, he was a member of the American Legion.
