KITCHEN Mr. John H. Kitchen, son of the late J.J. [sic; J.G.*] Kitchen and Elizabeth A. Kitchen of Sussex county, died at his home in Courtland, Sunday morning, July 17th, at 8:30 o'clock a.m., in the 53rd year of his age, after a brief illness of only a few days. The deceased was a member of the Courtland Baptist Church, having united with this church when he first came to our town to live about 31 years ago. He was married in June 1897 to Miss Blanche Gibson Williams of this place. He was a good husband, a kind and loving father and numbered a host of friends among his townsmen. The funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon from the residence by Rev. J.R. Johnson, pastor of the deceased, the Rev. Winfield Shiers of the Episcopal Church assisting. Interment followed in the family plot in Riverside Cemetery, where many beautiful floral designs were placed upon the grave by loved ones and friends who had assembled to pay their last tribute of respect. Bell, S.R. Nicholson, Jno. N. Sebrell, Sr., W.J. Sebrell, C.W. Richardson, E.P. Westbrook, B.B. Joyner, E. Whitfield, B.E. Livesay, Jr., H.B. McLemore, Dr. W.T. McLemore, J.W. Edwards, C.W. Williams, B.B. Rogers, C.W. Davis, G.W. Reese, L.M. Manry, W.J. Story, L.W. McGrath, Ezra W. Davis, J. Ben Davis, H.C. Edwards, W.E. Darden, Jas. T. Gillette, C.W. Parker, H.A. Gillette, Dr. E.F. Reese, C.L. Grizzard, Floyd Beale, Judson Branch, W.T. Pittman and J.W. Pulley. The deceased is survived by his wife; four daughters, Mabel, Irene, Bessie and Blanche Gibson Kitchen; one son, John Hinton Kitchen, Jr., of this place, and four sisters, Mrs. Jennie Hawkins, Mrs. John Riddle, Miss Gertie Kitchen and Miss Ettie Kitchen, and one brother, Mr. C.G. Kitchen, all of Sussex county. D.Cert. 16560 (Jerusalem #12) gives b. 26 Nov 1866, son of John D. KITCHEN; the informant was his daughter Mabel. His father John German KITCHEN was a Confederate veteran, having served as a private in Co. B, 9th VA Infantry; he d. in 1902 in Sussex Co. His mother Elizabeth Ann Delilah (RAIFORD) KITCHEN applied for a Confederate widow's pension 11 Oct 1912; d. 1 Jan 1920, Yale, and was buried in Sussex Co.
