KELLO DIES WEDNESDAY NIGHT, 71 Charles Blount Kello, well-known citizen and retired farmer of the Berlin community, died at his home Wednesday night, June 4, after an illness of several months. Mr. Kello was the son of the late Dr. Samuel B. Kello, prominent physician of this county, and of Mrs. Virginia Elenor Councill Kello, and had spent all of his life at his farm near Millfield Church. On July 27, 1905, he married Miss Hattie B. Stephenson of the same community, who survives him with three children, Charles B. Kello, Jr., Samuel B. Kello and Miss Martha Kello, all of Norfolk; and a brother, H.P. J. Kello of Crewe, Va. Charlie Kello, as he was familiarly known, had been a member of Millfield Baptist Church for many years and was a kindly, genial man who had a capacity for making many friends. Funeral services were conducted from his late home this (Friday) afternoon at 2:30 o’clock by his pastor, Rev. George Kissinger, and burial will take place in the family plot at the homestead where he had spent his life. Charles Blount* "Charlie" KELLO [Sr.], retired farmer, Southampton Co. native, d. 4 Jun 1941, at home, Berlin*, Southampton Co., age 71, interred in the KELLO family cemetery, Millfield Plantation*, 6 Jun 1941, "The Tidewater News" (Franklin, VA), June 6, 1944, p. 1 *Middle name formerly listed as "Blythe" - his father's middle name. Millfield Plantation was KELLO homestead for many generations, and considerable research is cited on the annotated list. Southampton County Historical Society {SCHS} Cemetery Project, Miscellaneous Cemeteries, Vol. 1 (I-11): http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/southampton/cemeteries/miscvol1.txt Obituary gleaned Find A Grave (Mem. #123731649, created by Charles Baker). There is no photo of an individual marker, and its seems doubtful there is one. The family marker gives "CHARLES B. KELLO" - as can be seen in the photo of the back of the stone, posted with the Find A Grave memorial (#123765799) for Charles' great-great-grandfather Richard Kello, first Clerk of Southampton Co. Courts. He is not on given on a different version of the SCHS list, by contributor Julian A. Felts. SCHS Cemetery Project, Miscellaneous Cemeteries, Vol. 4 (IV-25): http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/southampton/cemeteries/miscvol4.txt His marriage - Charles Blount Kello, 34, s, So.Co., So.Co., s/o Samuel Blythe and Virginia Eleanor Councill Kello, Farmer m. 07-27-1905 Bride's residence by Rev. G.C. Smith Hattie Brownley Stephenson, 26, s, So.Co., So.Co., d/o Richard Murrell and Martha Olivia Vick Stephenson (Southampton Co. MB12:249; transcribed & annotated by Bruce Saunders: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/southampton/vitals/mb12pt.txt) His widow was formerly given twice on the original version of list MV-I-11, as MARTHA "HATTIE" STEPHENSON KELLO & HATTIE B. KELLO - both seem in error. She has not been found as Martha in any authentic records. The family marker gives "HATTIE S. KELLO" - as can be seen in the photo. Hattie has two Find A Grave memorials - #123733103 for MV-I-11, and #111815322, for where she actually seems to be buried, with her second husband, Ralph V. Kille, in Oak Grove Cemetery (Sect. C, Row 13), Bowling Green, Wood Co., OH. Both include the suspect "Martha," but neither marker actually does. Neither the family marker nor the Family Bible - copies of which the SCHS donated to the Library of Virginia {LVA} - note her second marriage. (LVA, Misc. Bible records collection No. 84, Call No. 44873 MBRC 84) *Hattie's parents are buried in Millfield Baptist Church Cemetery.
