KING FRANKLIN - Joseph Pugh King, 78, died early Wednesday morning in Southampton Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Mrs. Elizabeth Rebecca Barham King and the son of Benjamin Frank King and Mrs. Katherine Butler King. He was a native of Bertie County, N.C., and had lived in Franklin since 1916. He was co-owner and business manager of the Tidewater News, local paper here, until 1940. He was a salesman for Mutual of New York Life Insurance Company, and owner of King Supply Company. He was a member of the Franklin Baptist Church, and the Franklin Masoic Lodge; veteran of the United States Navy during World War I; was chairman of the Franklin Democratic Committee and treasurer of the Franklin Welfare Department. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Arthur M. Roberts, of Brookfield Center, Conn.; one son, Joseph P. King Jr., of Franklin, and seven grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at the graveside in Poplar Spring Cemetery, at 11 a.m. Friday, by the Rev. Ira D. Hudgins. Immediately following the service a memorial service will be held in the Franklin Baptist Church. The family reguests all friends attending the graveside service to attend this service also. The family request in lieu of flowers that all donations be made to the Franklin Baptist Church Building Fund. ****************************************************************************** JOSEPH PUGH KING FRANKLIN - A funeral service for Joseph Pugh King Sr. Franklin businessman was conducted in Poplar Spring Cemetery, Friday at 11 a.m.by the Rev. Ira D. Hudgins assisted by the Rev. Dallas Stallings. After the graveside service, a memorial service was conducted in the Franklin Baptist Church. Holland Funeral Home was in charge. Pallbearers were G. Hinton Parker, Jr., Walter Norfleet, Jr., J.J. Finley Jr., Winston M. Brown, Roy Edwards, Felton Johnson, George Brown, Edwin Priggen and Joe Gay Bryant. A native of Bertie County, N.C. he was the husband of the late Mrs. Elizabeth Rebecca Barham of Capron and the son of Benjamin Frank and Mrs. Katherine Butler King of Bertie County, N.C. A member of the Franklin Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S.N. World War I, he was a member of the Franklin Masonic Lodge. He was head of the Democratic committee in Franklin and Southampton County. He was treasurer of the Franklin Welfare Committee. King was co-owner and business manager of The Tidewater News paper until 1940. He was representative of the Mutual Life Insurance Co. of New York and owner of the King Supply Co. Surviving him are one son, Joseph P. King Jr. of Franklin; one daughter, Mrs. Arthur M. Roberts of Brookfield Center, Conn. and seven grandchildren.
