Ira D. Hudgins assisted by the Rev. Dallas Stallings. After the graveside service, a memorial service was conducted in the Franklin Baptist Church. Holland Funeral Home was in charge. Pallbearers were G. Hinton Parker, Jr., Walter Norfleet, Jr., J.J. Finley Jr., Winston M. Brown, Roy Edwards, Felton Johnson, George Brown, Edwin Priggen and Joe Gay Bryant. King, 78, died early Wednesday morning in Southampton Memorial Hospital after an illness of several weeks. A native of Bertie County, N.C. he was the husband of the late Mrs. Elizabeth Rebecca Barham of Capron and the son of Benjamin Frank and Mrs. Katherine Butler King of Bertie County, N.C. A member of the Franklin Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S.N. World War I, he was a member of the Franklin Masonic Lodge. He was head of the Democratic committee in Franklin and Southampton County. He was treasurer of the Franklin Welfare Committee. King was co-owner and business manager of The Tidewater News paper until 1940. He was representative of the Mutual Life Insurance Co. of New York and owner of the King Supply Co. Surviving him are one son, Joseph P. King Jr. of Franklin; one daughter, Mrs. Arthur M. Roberts of Brookfield Center, Conn. and seven grandchildren.
