KING JR., SCHOOL LEADER, DIES Times-Dispatch state staff FRANKLIN - Joseph P. King, Jr., a longtime state public education leader and community and industrial relations manager for Union Camp Corp’s Franklin mill, died yesterday after a brief illness. He was 64. Mr. King was a member of the Franklin School Board from 1962 to 1973, during which time he served as vice chairman and chairman. The School Board recently announced that the next school would be named the Joseph P. King, Jr. Elementary School in recognition of his leadership. A past president of the Virginia School Boards association, he also served on the General Assembly’s Committee on the Rights of Public Employees and the Secretary of Education’s Commission on Excellence in Public Schools. He was co-chairman of the 1983 Governor’s Special Advisory Committee for Quality Education. He was a member of the executive board of the Old Dominion Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He was also a member of the board of directors of Dominion Bank of Greater Hampton Roads and of Southampton Memorial Hospital. He was twice chairman of the Board of Deacons at Franklin Baptist Church, where he and also been chairman of the financial committee. Mr. King was received a B.S. degree in 1942 from what is now Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and a B.A. in 1948 from the College of William and Mary. He also did postgraduate studies at the University of Virginia. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa national honor society. He was an officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II and the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Georgia Elaine Shelley King; three daughters, Mrs. Karen Daughtrey of Richmond, Mrs. Rebecca Junco of Hartford, Conn., and Ms. Elizabeth Anne King of Staunton; a son Richmond King of Crystal City; and a sister, Mrs. Katherine King Roberts of Bennington, Vt. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. tomorrow at Franklin Baptist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Joseph P. King, Jr. School Fund, in care of Franklin City Schools, 800 W. Second Ave., Franklin, Va. 23851.
