Knight, son of Thomas and Susan Knight, was born in Southampton county, Virginia, February 26, 1838. He was the fifth of a family of eleven children, only one of whom died during childhood. He spent his entire life in the county of his birth. His father died when Benjamin F. was quite young, and the responsibility of providing for his mother and dependant member of the family fell on him for a number of years, his two older brothers having been killed in the Civil War. This responsibility he born bravely and willingly. He honorably served his country during the entire period of the Civil War, receiving only a slight wound in his right hand. On January 17, 1867, he was married to Sally Ann Claud of Southampton county, who preceded him to the spirit world eighteen years ago. They lived happily and peaceably together at the old homestead for thirty-six years. In this home five children were born, all of whom survive him. He was an honest, upright gentleman , always ready to serve his church, his country and his fellowman. He was a member of Whitehead’s Methodist Church for more than half a century, and until health failed, about ten years ago. He took an active part in all worthy movements of the church and community. His life stands out as one of the highest Christian examples to all who knew him. He peacefully fell asleep April 7, 1921, age 83, 1 month and 12 days. He is survived by five children, J.T. and B.F. Knight of Wakefield, Va.; Mrs. W.P. Gillette, Sr., P.E. Knight and Mrs. Estelle Kirkland of Capron; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchildren also survive him, all of whom live in the hope of a beautiful and a happy reunion in the Great Beyond. The simple yet impressive funeral services were held from the family cemetery Friday afternoon conducted by J.R. Dickens, by request of the deceased, assisted by Rev. W.H. Riddick. There he was laid to rest in the presence of a large number of friends and relatives, the last token of love, highest respect and esteem his friends could bestow. By request of the deceased there were no conservatory floral designs, only several beautiful home-grown bouquets.
