SALLIE KIRKLAND WELCH, W.VA. - Mrs. Sallie Estelle Kirkland, 85, died Saturday morning in a local hospital after a short illness. She was a native of Southampton County, Va., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin F. Knight and the widow of John E. Kirkland. She is survived by a son, Claude Kirkland of Welch, and two stepsons, William H. Kirkland and Carlton Kirkland of Portsmouth, Va. A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Capron Baptist Church, Capron, Va. Burial will be in Courtland Cemetery. The body is being forwarded from O.J. Douglas Mortuary to W.J.M. Holland & Sons Funeral Home, Franklin, Va. ****************************************************************************** SALLIE ESTELLE KNIGHT KIRKLAND Mrs. Estelle Kirkland, 85, a lifelong resident of Southampton County, and a daughter of the late Benjamin F. and Sallie Claud Knight, passed away January 6th in a hospital in Welch. She had been visiting her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. C.K. Kirkland in Welch for the past several months. Before going to Welch, she had lived in Capron in the home of the late W.P. Gillette, Sr., her brother-in- law, for more than twenty-five years and was a devoted member of the family. Besides her son and daughter-in-law, she is survived by two step-sons, W.H. and John* Carlton Kirkland of Portsmouth, two grandsons, William Carlton and Walter Patrick Kirkland of Welch, one step-granddaughter of Jackson, N.C., three sisters-in-law, Mrs. B.F. Knight of Wakefield, Mrs. Jas. T. Knight of Sandston and Mrs. Lelia Knight of Baltimore and a number of nieces and nephews. Her husband, J.E. Kirkland, preceded her to the grave many years ago. In her early womanhood, she was an active member of Whiteheads Methodist Church, later joining the Capron Methodist Church, always faithful in attendance and happy to render service for her Master. She was a member of the Woman's Society of Christian Service and the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, January 9th in the Capron Church by her pastor, Rev. J.S. Peebles, assisted by a former pastor, Rev. R.H. Marks. Interment was in the Courtland Cemetery, besides her late husband. Pallbearer were Ben Knight of Wakefield, Ed Priggen and Stuart Jenkins of Courtland, Cooper P. Gillette, C.B. Pope, V.S.
