A native of Southampton County, he was the husband of Mrs. Addie Callis Kirkland and son of the late John Edward and Mrs. Lelia Williams Kirkland. He was a retired manager of The Home Beneficial Life Insurance, Co. and had worked for them 42 years. He was a member of Parkview Baptist Church. Besides his wife he is survived by two brothers, John Carlton Kirkland, Chesapeake and Claud K. Kirkland, Welch, West Virginia. He was president of the Berean Bible Class, president of Izaak Walton League Chapter. He was a member of Midday Masonic Lodge 132 AF and AM, a charter member of Portsmouth Scottish rite bodies, past president of the Portsmouth Lions Club, past president of the Business Men’s Bible Class luncheon club, and a member of Portsmouth Champber of Commerce. The remains were taken to Snellings Funeral Home, where a funeral service was held Wednesday at 2 p.m. by Dr. Thomas J. Powers, pastor of Parkview Baptist Church. Interment was at Courtland Cemetery, Courtland.
