He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Laura Bailey Luter; three sons Roscoe Luter of Zuni, John S. Luter of Newport News, and Joe W. Luter of Ivor; two brothers, William Luter of Zuni and Chester Luter of Suffolk; five half-brothers, R.C. and B.L. Luter, both of Suffolk, David Luter of Richmond, Harry Luter of Ivor, and George Luter of Honolulu, T.H.; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 3:30 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at the Ivor Baptist Church, followed by burial in the Ivor Cemetery. The services were conducted by Rev. T.N. Tombes, assisted by Rev. L.T. Saunders, Jr. The choir sang "In the Sweet Bye and Bye," and Mrs. N.F. Carr of Zuni sang "Sunrise Tomorrow." Active pallbearers were W.C. Andrews, H.A. Vaughan, C.M. Ramsey, Frank Pulley, Jr., G.C. Niblett, George C. Powell, Sr., L.T. Saunders, and John T. Faircloth, Sr. Honorary pallbearers were friends of the family and members of the Men’s Bible Class. His marker gives "JOHN S. LUTER."
