All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ GEORGE JORDAN LANE GEORGE LANE FUNERAL HELD SATURDAY Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at Poplar Spring Cemetery for George Jordan Lane, who was active in Franklin business and civic affairs for many years. Mr. Lane died about 4 a.m. Friday at the Raiford Memorial Hospital following a short illness. He was 67. Rev. Robert E. Davis, rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, conducted the funeral service. The family requested that, in lieu of flowers, friends donate to any favorite charity or fund. An automobile dealer for 27 years, 25 of them in Franklin, Mr. Lane joined with the late B.W. Godwin and the late George A. Howerton, Sr., to organize the Godwin Motor Co. in Suffolk in 1933. Two years later he sold his interest and moved to Franklin to found the Virginia-Carolina Motor Co. He retired early this year. He was sales manager of the raw peanut department for Planters Peanut Co. prior to entering the automobile business. He was the son of the late Levin and Mrs. Elizabeth Jordan Lane of Williamsburg. Mr. Lane was a past president of the Franklin Rotary Club, active in the Franklin Chamber of Commerce, president of the P.D. Camp Hunt Club, and a member of the Davis-Ridley Hunt Club. A member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, he was a past senior warden and vestryman. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Leigh Lane of their High Street home; a brother, James R. Lane of Suffolk; four sisters, Mrs. Ashton Dovell and Mrs. Vernon Geddy of Williamsburg; Mrs. Joseph Toth of Virginia Beach and Mrs. W. Kenneth Close of Courtland. The body was taken to the W.J.M. Holland and Sons Funeral Home. Pallbearers were William P. Wiseman, Douglas Smith, Edward Tuggle, L. Winder Lane, James R. Lane, Jr., Vernon M. Geddy, Jr., Kenneth D. Close, R. Stuart Baldwin and Capt. Joseph Toth. George Jordan LANE, retired businessman and civic leader, b.
