All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ KATHERINE DARDEN LINDSAY NORFOLK - Katherine Darden Lindsay of the 7300 block of Glenrole Ave. died Oct. 4, in her home. A native of Southampton County and the widow of Harvey Lee Lindsay, she was the sister of former Gov. Colgate W. Darden Jr. and former Norfolk Mayor Joshua Pretlow Darden. She was a member of Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. She attended St. Mary’s Junior College in Raleigh, N.C. In Norfolk, she was past chairman of the woman’s division of the Community Fund, served several times in Norfolk as chairman of fund drives for the Children’s Home Society, and was a president of the Norfolk Historical Society and the Garden Club of Norfolk and of the Associated Garden Clubs of Virginia for Roadside Development. She also was on the board of directors of the Garden Club of America. She service on the board of visitors of Old Dominion University and was a member of the Democratic Club of Norfolk. In 1961, she received the Massie Medal of the Garden Club of Virginia for her work in highway beautification. In 1960, she led garden clubs in persuading the General Assembly to adopt a bill regulating billboards on interstate highways. Her success in that long battle resulted in her appointment in 1965 to a state commission to study beautification of Virginia’s highways. Next, she worked for that cause on a national commission. During the 1960s she was among those who fought to keep Seashore State Park intact when the state was considering multiple uses for that park, which had been closed during court battles over racial desegregation of parks. She is survived by a son, Harvey L. Lindsay Jr.; two daughters, Mrs. Frank Nash Bilisoly III and Katherine Lindsay Kabler; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great- grandchildren. Private graveside services were held Tuesday at the family cemetery at "Beechwood" in Courtland with arrangements by H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk.
