Lawrence, Aged 77, Fatally Hurt When Accidentally Hit by Automobile Suffolk, March 1 - M.E. Lawrence, aged 77, prominent citizen of Franklin, died this morning at 11:58 o’clock from injuries received last night when he was struck by an automobile while crossing Main Street in Franklin. Mr. Lawrence was picked up and rushed to Raiford Hospital after having been struck by a car driven by W. Hunter Scott, of the county. He is survived by the following children: C.O. Lawrence, of Norfolk; W.L. Lawrence, M.E. Lawrence, Jr., and David Lawrence, of Seattle, Wash.; M.E. Lawrence, Jr., of Los Angeles; J.R. Lawrence, Mrs. G.W. Pillow, Mrs. W.B. Sykes and Miss Doris Lawrence, of Franklin; Miss Virginia Lawrence, of Buffalo Ridge, and Mrs. Winfield C. Jackley, of Des Moines, Iowa. He was a member of Franklin Baptist Church. The accident, which is said by bystanders to have been unavoidable, occurred when Mr. Lawrence stepped out in a driving rain from behind a parked car. Mr. Lawrence was born in Nansemond County on January 17, 1854, moving to Franklin in 1882 to become one of the community’s best known and most active civic and business leaders. For many years he was engaged in the buggy business. His wife was the late Mrs. Josie Pruden Lawrence, a native of Northampton County, North Carolina. Funeral services will be held at the home, 400 First Avenue, Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock and burial will be in Poplar Spring Cemetery. ****************************************************************************** MILLS EDWARD LAWRENCE M.E. LAWRENCE DEAD AS RESULT OF MOTOR ACCIDENT SATURDAY M.E. Lawrence, aged 77, died Sunday morning at Raiford Hospital from injuries received Saturday night when he was struck by an automobile driven by W. Hunter Scott of Franklin while crossing Main Street. The accident, which is said by bystanders to have been unavoidable, occurred when Mr. Lawrence stepped out in a driving rain from behind a parked car. Mills Edward Lawrence was born in Nansemond County near Suffolk January 17, 1854, the son of the late Richard and Mrs. Sarah Norfleet Lawrence. He lived most of his life in Franklin, spending two years in Jackson, N.C., before coming here. In 1881, he married Miss Josie Pruden of Seaboard, N.C., and they moved to Franklin in 1882, when he purchased the buggy business of the late A.M. Brownley, continuing to operate it many years. He was a member of the Franklin Baptist Church, of the Bruner Bible Class of that church, and of Franklin Lodge No. 51, Knights of Pythias. Surviving him are ten children; Mrs. W.B. Sykes, Mrs. G.W. Pillow, Miss Doris Lawrence and J. Richard Lawrence of Franklin; Miss Virginia Lawrence of Buffalo Ridge; C.O. Lawrence of Norfolk; W.S. Lawrence and David Lawrence of Seattle, Wash.; M.E. Lawrence, Jr., of Los Angeles, California, and Mrs. Winfield Jackley of Des Moines, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. L.A. Martin of Portsmouth, and by four grandchildren, Charlie and Billie Lawrence of Norfolk, M.E. Lawrence, 3rd, of Los Angeles and Lawrence Jackley of Des Moines. Funeral services were conducted from the residence in First Avenue Monday afternoon by his Pastor, Rev. R.D. Stephenson, assisted by Rev. J.W. Fix of the Franklin Christian Church, and nephew of Mr. Lawrence’s, Rev. Edward H. Pruden of Petersburg, where a large assemblage of friends was gathered. Mrs. F.E. Howell and Mrs. Herbert Cobb sang "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder" and "I’m Bound for the Promised Land." Interment was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery, Franklin Lodge No. 51, Knight of Pythias having charge of the services. The pallbearers were: Dr. J.B. Powell, W.R. Atkinson, Harry Steinhardt, W.H. Norfleet, Henry Duck, J.S. Collier, A.D. Smithwick and Roger I. Beale.
