Majette, son of the late Roswell S. and Mrs. Effa Smith Majette, two prominent Virginia families died Christmas Eve at his home in Jesup, Georgia. His death was the result of a second attack of paralysis, a first stroke being sustained eight years ago. Mr. Majette, known by his many friends in Southampton as "Eddie," was born October 20, 1868, at the old Majette homestead. He received his early education at Buckhorn Academy, Como, under Captain Julian H. Picot. Later he attended college at Spring Hill, Ga. He went to Georgia to live in 1888, where he married Miss Vera Swinney, daughter of Dr. Swinney of McCrae, Georgia. Mrs. Majette is a prominent lawyer and judge in Jesup, Georgia. She, with one son, Roswell, two daughters, Mrs. D.L. Grant and Mrs. Joseph H. Bond of Bronxville, New York; three grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. T.H. Barrett of Statesville, survive him. He is also survived by a large circle of relatives, family connections, and friends. His family and friends remember his as a most lovable, genial and witty character. His body was brought to his sister’s home, the Majette place at Statesville, where the funeral services were conducted Monday, December 26 by Rev. Mr. Holman, pastor of Barnes church, assisted by Rev. N.B. Foushee of Sunbeam. Mrs. H.M. Purviance, accompanied by Miss Retta Hart sang two solos "Carry Me Back to Ole Virginny" of which Mr. Majette was especially fond, and "Sometimes We’ll Understand." A sixtette, Mrs. Hugh Barrett, Mrs. L.A. Hill, Mrs. J.T. Bryant, Mrs. Purviance, Rosser Bryant and E.W. Evans sang "When They Ring Those Golden Bells." "Rock of Ages" was sung at the grave. The casket was covered with a pall of red roses and calla lilies. Interment was made in the family burying ground. The active pallbearers were: R.A. Majette, Jethro Majette, Julian Worrell, Roswell Hart, Rosser Bryant, Dick Railey, J.E. Caroon, and M.E. Barrett. Honorary pallbearers: J.R. Hart, H.A. Barrett, C.R. Everett, Ray Simmons, Jim Simmons, W.E. Myrick, W.J. Worrell, E.W. Evans, Hugh Lee, R.B. Brett, J.R. Railey, E.J. Railey, J.B. Ferguson, A.J. Bryant, R.F. Boyette, F.O. Edwards, R.C. Brett, , J.T. Bryant, V.K. Daughtrey, E.F. Drake, J.R. Barnes, W.T. Oberry, L.L. Thorpe, W.L. Brett and George Brett.
