McDONALD WALTERS - Funeral services for John Birt McDonald were conducted today at 1:30 p.m. in W.J.M. Holland Funeral Home, Franklin, by the Rev. Thomas D. Sutton, pastor of Mt. Carmel Christian Church. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Mr. McDonald, 59, died Wednesday in a hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Mrs. Louise Rose McDonald and a son of John Dunk and Mrs. Birt Shaw McDonald [sic*]. A native of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., he lived in the Franklin and Walters area 20 years. He worked for Union Bag-Camp Co. and was member of Mt. Carmel Christian Church. Besides his widow, surviving are a son, John Robert McDonald of Hertford, N.C.; three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Lassiter of Franklin, Mrs. Catherine Gilbert of Washington and Mrs. Susie Draper of Richmond; three half sisters, Mrs. Annie Babb, Mrs. Lola Walters, and Mrs. Ruth Clifton, and a brother, William McDonald, all of Roanoke Rapids; a half brother, Bagley Rock of Atlanta; and three grandchildren. M.Cert. 19498 (IoW.Co. #32) also gives his parents as John Dunk and Birt Shaw McDonald. His father John Duncan McDONALD (1870 - 1936) & step-mother are buried in Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids, NC. His step-mother Alice (SHAW ROOK) McDONALD may have been a sister of his birth mother. Her father John Duncan SHAW (1835 - 1916) was a Confederate veteran.
