McLemore in Courtland Saturday afternoon which were conducted from his late residence at 2:30 o’clock by his Pastor, the Rev. H.F. Turner of the Courtland M.E. Church, assisted by a former Pastor, Rev. J.E. Brooks of Deep Creek, and Dr. George Wesley Jones of Main Street M.E. Church, Suffolk. During the service Miss Alyce Page Adams sang "My Jesus As Thou Wilt," with Mrs. J.D. Riddick of Danville as accompanist. Mr. McLemore, who was a beloved figure and the popular Circuit Court Clerk of this county for nearly 25 years, succeeding his father, the late B.F. McLemore, who also served in that capacity for a quarter of a century, died last Thursday afternoon after a brief illness. The crowd present at the funeral was estimated at from 1500 to 1800 and included many prominent political leaders and attorneys from Suffolk, Norfolk, Richmond and other Virginia cities. The floral tributes were beautiful, constituting one of the most elaborate displays ever seen at a similar occasion in Southampton, including special designs from the Board of Supervisors, county officials, the Wesley Bible Class of the Courtland M.E. Church and the Courtland High School football squad. The active pallbearers were his two brothers, Judge James L. McLemore of Suffolk and Dr. W.T. McLemore of Courtland; five nephews, Hennen McLemore, Thomas, Hall and Harvard Birdsong and Adrian Bowen of Washington, N.C.; H.H. Macklin and C.W. Parker of Courtland. Burial was made in the family plot in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland.
