All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ ANNIE GARRETT MASON CHURCH AND CIVIC LEADER BURIED IN BOYKINS BOYKINS - Mrs. Annie Garrett Mason, 68, woman’s leader of Southampton County, died Monday night in a Richmond hospital after illness of several months. Mrs. Mason was the wife of John Young Mason and a daughter of Ben and Mrs. Lelia Farmer Garrett. She was a native of Cumberland Court House and lived in the Boykins community 48 years. She was a member of Boykins Methodist Church and of Boykins Woman’s Club, a past Southside District president of the Virginia Federation of Woman Clubs, and Southampton County secretary and treasurer of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union. She also had been a zone leader of the Woman’s Society of Christian Service and taught the Mason Bible Class at Boykins Church 25 years. She was a graduate of Longwood College and taught school in Rockbridge County and Southampton County Schools. Besides her husband, surviving are one son, John Y. Mason, Jr., of Richmond; one foster son, Garrett Hughes Turner of Richmond; one brother, Calvin C. Garrett of Cumberland County; two sisters, Mrs. Joseph D. Carpenter of Cumberland Court House and Mrs. Lytt Landram of Doswell; and three granddaughters. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Boykins Methodist Church by the Rev. Harrell G. Thach pastor, assisted by the Rev. William Ferguson of Monumental Methodist Church, Emporia, and the Rev. Ben B. Ussery of Boykins Baptist Church. Burial was in Beechwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were H.T. Smith, A.L. Knight, Jr., W.R. Emmons, George Davis, J.C. Blowe, J. David Sykes and Raymond A. Bunn.
