M’CANN DIES AT HOME FOLLOWING EXTENDED SICKNESS George Grandstaff McCann, 78, died at his home, "White Chimneys," on Thursday morning, October 26, after several years of failing health. He had been a resident of Franklin since February, 1913. A son of the late Newton French and Ellen Koontz McCann of Shenandoah County, Mr. McCann was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, which he had served as vestryman, treasurer and superintendent of its Sunday school. He was at one time on the executive board of the Diocese of Southern Virginia, and was twice elected as a delegate to the general convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church. Always taking a great interest in civic affairs, Mr. McCann served on the School Board of the town of Franklin and was for several terms a member of the County School Board. He had been a member of the Masonic order for more than 50 years, re-training his membership in the Stevenson Commandery No. 8, Knights Templar, of Staunton and belonging to Franklin Lodge No. 151, A.F. & A.M., of which he had been worshipful master and treasurer. Mr. McCann came to Southampton County in 1911 to work for the Baker-Minter Lumber Company at Delaware. In 1913 he was made secretary-treasurer of the Franklin Buggy Company, and was afterwards connected with the Franklin Peanut Company and the Albemarle Steam Navigation Company. When the last named establishment went out of business he entered the employ of Camp Manufacturing Company, retiring a few years ago. On October 6, 1917, he married Miss Sue Pretlow of Franklin, who survives him. He is survived also by a son, George G. McCann, Jr., of Franklin; two daughters, Miss Sue Pretlow McCann of Franklin and Miss Ellen French McCann of Richmond; two grandchildren, George Grandstaff McCann, 3d, and Florence Foote McCann of Franklin; and two sisters, Mrs. John H. Santmiers and Miss Ellen Hope McCann of Edinburg. Funeral services for Mr. McCann were conducted at Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Friday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock by Bishop William A. Brown of Portsmouth. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The active pallbearers were all members of the Franklin Masonic Lodge; W. Graham Atkins, Dr. J.P. Broaddus, Ernest M. Bryant, Leland Fleetwood, George H. Parker, J.F. Sandlin, Henry Thorne and George Watkins.
