McGRATH GREAT LOSS TO COUNTY Supervisor for 24 years dies Sunday in Capron community in particular suffered an irreparable loss in the passing of Louis William McGrath, who died at his home in Capron on Sunday afternoon, September 28, after a long period of declining health due to heart trouble. At the time of his death Mr. McGrath was 73 years of age. Born near Salisbury, Md., Mr. McGrath moved to Southampton County while still a young man, finding employment with the Truitt and Vincent Lumber Company. With the end in sight of the timber holdings of the Company he went into business for himself, operating ground sawmills in the western half of the county and hauling the lumber to the box factory at Capron. All the while he was interested in farming, and he owned and operated several farms in the vicinity of Capron. A successful business man with conservative views, Mr. McGrath served at one time on the Capron District School Board; and for twenty-four years he was a member of the Southampton County Board of Supervisors, though his period of service was not continuous. In recent years he became a member of the County Welfare Board, to which he devoted the same interest and energy he gave to his other activities. Casting his lot with the Vincent Grove Methodist Church, he was superintendent of its Sunday School. A fitting tribute to this fine upstanding citizen is to record that he was willing to serve to the utmost of his ability and strength the organizations to which he belonged. Mr. McGrath is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie Hobbs McGrath; a daughter, Mrs. E.G. Maxwell, of Baltimore; two sons, Leslie H. McGrath of Plant City, Fla., and Harold C. McGrath of Courtland; two half-sisters, Mrs. Annie Spitznagle and Mrs. Florence Brown of Fruitland, Md.; and six grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. McGrath were held in Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock in the Capron Methodist Church. His pastor, Rev. L.D. Stables, officiating, assisted by Rev. R.H. Marks of Capron and Rev. Percy D. White of Courtland. A quartette composed of John Tyler Darden, L.L. Story, Rev. W.L. Sturtevant and S.W. Purviance accompanied by Mrs. H.M. Purviance, sang two favorites of the deceased, "Saved By Grace" and "Golden Jubilee." At the graveside in Capron Cemetery, where interment was made, they sang another favorite, "Abide With Me."
