Matthews gently passed to her lasting Sleep Friday afternoon just as the sun was passing beyond the western hills. Despite the fact that she had been ill for two weeks, her death was a shock to the community, for her condition was not generally deemed so extreme. Funeral services were conducted from their handsome new residence Saturday at one o'clock by her pastor, Mr. Spruill, assisted by Mr. Sutton. The pallbearers were M.J. Boling, W.A. Teague, L.L. Wrenn, I.S. London, M.M. Fox and Ed. Woody. The remains were carried to Virginia Saturday afternoon and interred in the Johnson family graveyard near Zuni. Accompanying the remains were her husband, G.E. Matthews; brother, Bradley Johnson; and Walter Matthews and Millard Fox, the last name being sent by the Masonic and Pythian Lodges of Siler City. The funeral party arrived at Zuni Sunday morning, and in the afternoon at three Rev. A.B. Dunnaway conducted services at Tucker Swamp church, two miles from Zuni, following which the interment was at the family graveyard one mile distant. Mrs. Matthews was in her 36th year and prior to her marriage was Miss Ethel Mae Johnson, of Southampton County, Virginia. In November, 1900, she was married to G.E. Matthews, and they moved to Siler City in 1908, where he is a successful druggist. She was a member of the Baptist church, and identified with the church work, having in charge a Sunday school class of young boys. Her death makes the fourth death in the Johnson family since Christmas. No Find a Grave Memorial D.Cert. 330 (Siler City #7) gives her mother as Mary A. (SPIVEY; Mrs. W.E.) JOHNSON. Rather, her mother was Alice Elizabeth SPIVEY (1853 - ca. 1901), daughter of George W. & Mary SPIVEY, who m. William E. JOHNSON (b. 1846), son of Jesse H. & "Polly" Mary Catherine (JOHNSON) JOHNSON, 15 Mar 1870. (Southampton Co. MB1A:364; M.Reg. p. 35 #31) Her father (b. 1846) was a Confederate veteran. He 2m. Laura E GREGORY 13 Jan 1903. He killed Laura, then himself, 2 Jan 1916.
