  In Southampton county, on Sunday, a house near Jerusalem, occupied by a 
colored* man named Mathews, was struck by lightning, and himself and child 
instanly killed.  His wife was very dangerously injured at the same time, 
and is not expected to recover.

                        JERUSALEM, VA., August 16, 1881.

  The storm last Saturday was one of the most terrific, and a gentleman by the 
name of Matthews, and his little daughter, two or three years of age, living 
near here on the land of Mr. C.C. Williams, were struck snd killed by 
lightning.  His wife also was so severely shocked that it is thought that she 
will finally die from the shock.  PHOCIAN.

NC native, killed by lightning 13 Aug 1882, at home, Southampton Co., age 32, 
interred in the McCLENNY family cemetery*, Sedley 

Florence R. MATTHEWS, 
daughter of Jesse W.R. & Nancy C. (McCLENNY ROWE) MATTHEWS, 
VA native, killed by lightning 13 Aug 1882, at home, Southampton Co., age 2, 
interred in the McCLENNY family cemetery (unmarked*), Sedley

The family was white, not colored.  They appear in the 1880 Census 
   with in-laws James & "Winney" (BEAMAN) McCLENNY. 
   (Jerusalem, Southampton Co., pp. 36-37) 

Jesse is buried with his brother-in-law James M. McCLENNY in a McCLENNY 
   family cemetery, on the property of Sedley Baptist Church; 
   unmarked, Florence has been added to the list.

Jesse m. 20 Dec 1877 widow Nancy, at her father's. (Southampton Co. MB3:220) 

Nancy's 1m. 13 Jul 1871, in Gates Co., NC, James M. ROWE ["Row"], a brother 
   of her sister-in-law Marietta R. (ROWE; Mrs. James M.) McCLENNY. 

Patrick & Martha (JOYNER) ROWE appear in the 1860 Census with 3 sons,  
   James, 21; J., 17, & F., 15.  (E of Nottoway R., Southampton Co., p. 94) 

The {recopied} Southampton Co. D.Recs. give: 
   Rowe, James M. d. 9 Dec 1865, age 19; Jese d. 8 Sep 1873. (D.Recs. p. 369) 
   Frank appeared in the 1870 Census as a Sawyer, age 24.  (B&I, So.Co.)
