All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ HENRY THOMAS MILES OCTOGENARIAN DIES SATURDAY AT FARM HOME NEAR NEWSOMS Henry Thomas Miles, 89, a prominent farmer of the county, died at his home near Newsoms of Saturday April 16. He had been in declining health for several years. The deceased was the son of the late Henry T. and Mary Holloman Miles of this county. His father fought in the War Between the States and died while in service. In his boyhood Mr. Miles lived with an uncle in Greensville County, returning to Southampton in his late teens to make his home here. He was a charter member of the Newsoms Baptist Church, which was organized in 1883, and served as a deacon for over 50 years and as treasurer for much of that time. He was married three times, his first two wives being sisters, Misses Maggie and Josephine Kitchen, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Robert Kitchen. His last marriage was to Miss Nina Ferguson, who survives him. He is survived by two children of his first marriage, Miss Mollie Bet Miles and Mrs. R.D. Miles of Newsoms. Surviving children of his second marriage are six daughters, Mrs. E.C. Davis of Branchville, Mrs. S.C. Ferguson of Como, N.C., Mrs. R.L. Cogsdale of Apopka, Fla., and Mrs. J.L. Cogsdale, Mrs. L.L. Porter and Mrs. B.L. Bunn, all of Newsoms; and two sons, H.S. Miles of Suffolk and H.K. Miles of Pendleton, N.C. Besides his wife and children, he is survived by 26 grandchildren, 17 great- grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Virginia Simmons, the last of Branchville. Funeral services were conducted from the late residence on Monday afternoon at three residence on Monday afternoon at three o’clock by his pastor, Rev. R.L. Chadwick, assisted by Rev. C.P. Cleveland and Rev. Rives Ferguson. Burial was in the Newsoms cemetery, active pallbearers being Hersey Bradshaw, Roy Bradshaw, Russell Ferguson, Samuel Ferguson, and Leland and Irving Blanchard.
