Mumford died at his home in Fontain avenue Monday, June 13, in his fifty-fifth year after a long illness. He had been confined to his bed for over six months, and during this period fully realized that he would soon be called cross over the River that marks the unknown shore. He constantly spoke of his death to his friends and loved ones which would often cast the shadows of sorrow in their path, but hastened to assure them that he was ready to go and was patiently awaiting his Master’s call. On Friday afternoon he was even more critically ill. The doctor was immediately summoned and after his arrival Mr. Mumford was pronounced beyond human aid. From that time until his death his suffering was almost inexpressible. The bitter struggle with death was ever upon him, so on Monday after, June 13, as the summer sun was slowly sinking in the West, he fell sweetly asleep in the arms of Jesus. The Christian character of him who has departed from us, and the patience and endurance of his long suffering, never complaining of his long confinement and sickness, never a murmur at the dark shadows of death, which were slowly but surely overtaking him, should be an inspiration to his friends, that when death comes to us and to those who are near to our hearts, we should, like him who has gone on before us, be ready and willing to go with the Saviour. The deceased was born in Isle of Wight county.* He had been a resident of Franklin for the past three years. He was a member of Friends Black Creek Church for several years. On December 23, 1886, he was married to Miss Annie Beaton of Nansemond county*, who has ever been a faithful companion to him. The funeral services were held at his home Tuesday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Dr. C.H. Rowland and Rev. M.A. MacLean of Franklin. The singing was rendered by Mrs. - Geo. Earnest, W.A. Daughtrey, E.C. Beale, and C.H. Rowland, of the Christian Church choir. The pallbearers were Geo. Gray, J.F. Sanderlin, J.H. Joyner, Sidney A. Wiggins, L.B. Norfleet and W.O. Bristow. Again as the sun marked the end of another day, and after "Sleep On Beloved" was sung over the grave, he was laid to rest in a beautifully selected spot in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Mr. Mumford leaves, besides his wife, three children, J.L. Mumford, C.B. Mumford and Miss Dana Bell Mumford. William H.
