A native of Ossian, Ind., he moved to Boykins in January, 1910, and established the Boykins Drug Company, which he had operated continually since that time. A quiet, unassuming man, he numbered many friends among the Boykins people, both white and colored. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Nellie Mannes, and one daughter, Miss Gertrude Mannes, both of Boykins. Funeral services were held at the graveside in Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins, on Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock, with Rev. M. W. Anderson, pastor of the Boykins Methodist Church, officiating, assisted by Rev. W. L. Sturtevant of Calio, a former pastor, and Rev. N. B. Habel, pastor of the Boykins Baptist Church. Mrs. H. M. Purviance sang "At Eventide." The casket was covered by a pall of lilies and red roses. An unusually large crowd, including many colored friends of the deceased, was in attendance. The active pallbearers were Norman S. Beaton, Dr. J. M. Bland, J. R. Broocke, Dr. J. J. Grizzard, H. F. McCoy, C. B. Rock, Jr., J. M. White, Jr., and W. W. White.
