Murphy of Newsoms died at Sarah Leigh hospital, Norfolk, July 13, 1916. He was stricken with appendicitis on Thursday, July 6, and was taken to the hospital by his physician, Dr. W.B. Barham, for an operation. The operation seemed to be successful and hopes were entertained for his recovery, but on Tuesday the 12th he began to grow worse and died on Thursday afternoon. The body was brought to Newsoms for interment. Funeral service were conducted in the Baptist church by Rev. L.F. Paulette, assisted by Rev. A.L. Carson, and he was laid to rest in the Newsoms cemetery. The local order W.O.W. turned out en masse and conducted burial services at the grave, in which Mr. Lathan, State deputy, and Rev. A.L. Carson participated. The pallbearers were O.H. Barkley, H.S. Miles, Eddie Vick, Hugh Vincent, K.D. Worrell, W.E. Griffin. All of these were members of the Berean Class of the Newsoms Baptist Sunday School, half of them being members of the local camp W.O.W. Mr. Murphy was a consistent member of the Baptist church and a regular attendant upon its services. He possessed the gold pin of the Cross and Crown system, for regular attendance at Sunday School. He was held in high esteem by the people of the community as was attested by the large crowd at his funeral and the any beautiful floral designs. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hattie Vick Murphy, and two bright children Georgia and Ralph. Edward C.
