BESSIE KITCHEN MARKS DIES OF BURNS SUSTAINED LAST WEEK Mrs. Bessie Kitchen Marks, age 44, wife of Edwards L. Marks, died in Raiford Memorial Hospital in Franklin Friday night at 7:15 o'clock from horrible burns she suffered early that morning while starting a fire in a coal stove in the living room. Her daughter, Miss Ann Marks, who was in the bedroom directly above the living room was awakened by the exploding oil can and calls of her mother and rushed down to find her in flames. Mr. and Mrs. Gillette Bryant, who live next door to the Marks' home heard her screams for help and seeing her in the rear doorway enveloped in flames, were the first to reach the scene. Mr. Bryant smothered the flames with blankets and summoned neighbors who quickly gathered and put out the fire in the house which was confined to the one room doing extensive damage. Mrs. Marks was rushed to the hospital which was notified by telephone of her coming. Mr. Marks was at his work in Norfolk at time. Her brother, J. Hinton Kitchen, who made his home with his sister, had left for his work in Courtland only a few minutes before the tragedy. Mrs. Marks was the daughter of the late John H. and Mrs. Blanche Williams Kitchen of Courtland. She was a consistent member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Courtland. Besides her husband she is survived by two daughters, Misses Ann Radcliffe and Shirley Fox Marks of Sebrell and two sons Edward L. Marks, III, U.S. Navy, and James Franklin Marks of Sebrell; three sisters, Mrs. N.L. Thomas, of Jeffs; Miss Irene Kitchen of Petersburg and Miss Mabel Kitchen of Courtland; one brother J. Hinton Kitchen of Sebrell. Funeral services were conducted at the grave in Riverside Cemetery in Courtland by the Rev. William Brayshaw of Christ Episcopal Church, Smithfield. The pallbearers were L.M. Marks, Leroy Magette, P.B. Davis, L.A. Clements, Hinton Marks, Frank Culpeper, V.S. Pittman and Ben Williams. Bessie (KITCHEN; Mrs. Edward L.
