Nicholson, a popular and prominent citizen of Southampton, died at his home in that county on Sunday last, aged about 55 years. David W. NICHOLSON, farmer, Sussex Co. native, d. 24 Mar 1872, at home, Southampton Co., age ca. 49, "The Daily State Journal" (Richmond, VA), Mar. 29, 1872 (Vol. 4, No. 134), p. 1, col. 3 Additional information: The (recopied) Southampton Co. Death Records (1853-1890) give the following: Nicholson, David H., d. 24 Mar 1871, age 49, parents unknown {orig.p. 3 #9} Nicholson, Harriett, d. 7 Jul 1867, age 1 yr, 22 mos [sic; 1 mo, 22 ds], dt/o D.W. & Mildred {orig.p. 1 #20} (Southampton Co. Death Records {1853-1890}, p. 321) He appears consistently in the Birth Register as David W. Nicholson, or D.W. He reported the births of several free black ARTIS neighbors and his own three children: Saml. R., b. 15 Jan 1866, sn/o David W. & Mildred Nicholson (p. 73 #53) Harriet, b. 14 May 1867, dt/o David W. & Mildred Nicholson (p. 78 #45) [unnamed], b. 15 Apr 1869, sn/o David W. & Mildred H. Nicholson (p. 83 #34) He 1m. Caroline Amanda EDWARDS, 14 Dec 1848 Sussex Co. They appear in the 1860 Census in Southampton Co., West Side Nottoway River, ages 38 & 36, respectively.
